In different countries the Milky Way comes in many different varieties such as Milky Way Crisp rolls in the UK, fruit flavored Milky Ways in Australia and ice cream Milky Way’s that are offered here in the U.S.!

Goo Goo Cluster!

Creamy milk chocolate, roasted peanuts, gooey caramel and marshmallow nougat, a true “Southern Treat” as the company puts it. The Goo Goo cluster revolutionized candy bars as we know them, it was one of the first candies that consisted of more then one principal ingredient! This delicious candy was first produced in 1912, in Nashville, TN at Standard Candy Company in a copper kettle.  The name for the Goo Goo cluster comes from the idea that “Goo goo” is the first words a baby tries to speak, so, “It’s so good, people will ask for it from birth!”

What makes this candy interesting is not only where its ingredients combination really un heard of for one candy bar, but also its shape. Goo Goo clusters are circular in a time where square and rectangle candies were the norm. Due to their round shape Goo Goo clusters where first shown un wrapped and had to be displayed under a glass dome in stores, soon after that women in the factory would hand wrap each Goo Goo cluster until eventually machinery took over. At Standard Candy in Nashville today they can produce 20,000 Goo Goo clusters in an hour!

Annabelle's Big Hunk!

If you’re a honey fan, you defiantly know and enjoy the Big Hunk candy bar from Annabelle’s.  Big Hunk is appropriately named because it is really just a big hunk of white taffy infused with honey and peanuts! This delicious candy bar was used to be produced by the Golden Nugget Candy company but was purchased by Annabelle’s   in the 1970’s.  There isn’t much history on the candy bar itself but that doesn’t stop everyone from loving and enjoying it!

Sam Altshuler, the founder of Annabelle’s Candy Company, started his candy career by making his own candy at home and selling it in front of movie theaters and gained a small following. From there he went on to continue his dream of making candy all through out the Great Depression and World War II where he finally formed the corporation Annabelle’s Candy in 1950. Not only do we have him to thank for the Big Hunk candy bar but also U-No, Rocky Road, Abba-Zaba, and Look!

The Sky Bar!

In the 1930’s chocolate variety was very slim, that’s why when Necco came up with this unique chocolate bar they knew they had to make it special. Produced and announced to the public by dramatic sky writing in 1938, the Sky Bar is one of the most unique chocolate candy bars Necco has made. Filled with four different centers of caramel, vanilla, peanut, and fudge, its hard not to like this tasty chocolate bar! Not even 10 years later Americans would once again be “wowed” by the Sky bar, on VE-Day it was one of the only six working and illuminated signs in New York’s Time Square.

Necco is still a very popular candy company and still produces candy but their Sky Bar has become quite elusive. Many people are surprised and delighted when they see that here at SugarPop’s we carry such an iconic and elusive candy bar!
